Tedros became a member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which began a protracted rebellion against the military government and was crucial in the 1991 overthrow of Mengistu Haile Mariam, Ethiopia’s Marxist dictator. The victory resulted in swapping out a Amhara-dominated government with one led by Tigray leaders, which led to more than a decade of conflict.
Journalist Abebe Gellaw claims Tedros was one of the top three members of the TPLF and that the party is “ultimately responsible for all the corruption, killings, torture, mass detention, land grab or displacement,” he wrote in the Ethiopian Registrar.
The United States State Department has categorized TPLF as a terrorist organization due to its “violent activities before it became part of the ruling coalition and the government of Ethiopia in May 1991.”

Mugabe, 93, is blamed in the West for destroying Zimbabwe’s economy and numerous human rights abuses during his 37 years leading the country as either president or prime minister.
In announcing the appointment, Tedros had praised Zimbabwe as “a country that places universal health coverage and health promotion at the centre of its policies to provide health care to all”.
But multiple critics noted that Mugabe, who is 93 and in increasingly fragile health, travels abroad for medical care because Zimbabwe’s health care system has been so severely decimated.
The US ambassador to the United Nations during Barack Obama’s administration, Samantha Power, tweeted: “The only person whose health 93-yo Mugabe has looked out for in his 37 year reign is his own.”

During 2017, the total amount of money provided to the WHO by countries was exceeded by that coming from non-state actors, including the pharmaceutical industry. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation contributed almost $327 million to the WHO’s General and Fiduciary Funds, making it the second-largest donor overall. The only donations to these funds higher than those of the Gates Foundation came from the government of the United States.
